Ai Weiwei, Giulio Paolini, Kazuyo Sejima, Ryue Nishizawa, Krystian Zimerman, And Wim Wenders Awarded The 2022 Praemium Imperiale

The recipients of the 33rd PRAEMIUM IMPERIALE, the world’s most prestigious art prize, have been revealed by the Japan Art Association. The 2022 honorees have been recognized for their excellent individual achievements, international effect on the arts, and involvement in enhancing the global society. They are:

Painting            Giulio Paolini (Italy)
Sculpture          Ai Weiwei (China)
Architecture      Kazuyo Sejima + Ryue Nishizawa/SANAA (Japan)
Music                Krystian Zimerman (Poland/Switzerland)
Theatre/Film     Wim Wenders (Germany)

In an awards event on October 19, 2022, each recipient will be received by Prince Hitachi, honorary patron of the Japan Art Association.

The Japan Art Association also announces the nomination of Hillary Rodham Clinton, former Secretary of State of the United States, as International Advisor to the Praemium Imperiale; she will chair the United States Nomination Committee.

The Praemium Imperiale, like the Nobel Prize, has become a powerful voice for the value of the arts, honouring remarkable achievement globally.

The Praemium Imperiale also recognizes a group or institution that encourages the involvement of young people in the arts with its Grant for Young Artists.

The 2022 Grant for Young Artists is awarded to the Kronberg Academy Foundation (Germany).
