Release Date: 2024-09-20

The album includes the track “Strawberry Hill“, which draws inspiration from Hemphill’s childhood in California and his interest in oldies music compilations curated by Los Angeles DJ Art Laboe. Other tracks on the album include “Predictable Pan (Theme From A Book Of Perfectly Drawn Lines)” and “Opening Chord”.

Rhetoric & Terror features vocal contributions from Hemphill’s wife, Angelika Kaswalder, throughout the album. Additionally, multi-instrumentalist Morgan Henderson provides woodwind performances. Henderson, who previously played in the post-hardcore band The Blood Brothers, is a long-time associate of Hemphill’s.

The album’s title is derived from a chapter in Giorgio Agamben’s book “The Man Without Content”. In this work, Agamben uses the concepts of rhetoric and terror to categorize two types of writers: the rhetorician and the terrorist. Hemphill states that for this album, he aimed to begin with emotions and feelings, integrating his creative process with his daily life and responsibilities.

Hemphill describes the album as “emotionally available”, representing a departure from the more conceptual approach of his 2018 solo debut, Scented Pictures. He mentions that the creation process involved balancing his roles as a musician, partner, and parent.

Rhetoric & Terror will be available on vinyl, CD, and digital formats upon its release.

Aaron Hemphill is a musician and composer based in Berlin, Germany. He was a founding member of the experimental rock band Liars, formed in 2000. Hemphill contributed to several Liars albums before his departure from the group in 2016. Following his exit from Liars, Hemphill began releasing music under the name Nonpareils. His first solo album as Nonpareils, Scented Pictures, was released in 2018. Hemphill’s work often explores various compositional approaches and incorporates elements from different musical genres.
