Pure Hell formed in Philadelphia in the early 1970s and was one of the first African American punk bands. Drawing influence from British Invasion groups, glam theatrics, and proto-punk energy, the band developed a sound marked by speed, aggression, and defiance. Their 1978 album Noise Addiction remained unreleased for decades due to legal disputes, gaining a near-mythical status through bootlegs and lost recordings.
