The group shared a preview of the album through the track “Things We Tell Ourselves in the Dark,” accompanied by a video directed by Miles Skarin. According to Tommy Rogers, the lyrics across The Blue Nowhere avoid narrative structures and instead draw from fragmented internal monologues. He describes the record as rooted in introspection rather than overarching concepts. Bassist Dan Briggs, credited as the originator of the track’s musical framework, describes its rhythmic character as based around a recurring bass motif with melodic layering, referencing influences outside the progressive metal idiom.

Between the Buried and Me formed in 2000 in North Carolina. The band’s lineup has remained stable since 2005 and includes Tommy Rogers (vocals, keyboards), Paul Waggoner (lead guitar), Dustie Waring (rhythm guitar), Dan Briggs (bass), and Blake Richardson (drums). Across two decades, they have produced a series of longform albums often structured around conceptual continuity, including Colors (2007), The Parallax II: Future Sequence (2012), and the two-part Automata project (2018). Their work frequently incorporates abrupt stylistic shifts and complex time signatures, drawing from progressive rock, death metal, electronic music, and jazz fusion. The group’s material is released primarily through Victory Records (2003–2011), Metal Blade (2011–2021), and now InsideOutMusic.
