BRUIT ≤, the French instrumental project rooted in experimental sound, will release its second full-length album, The Age Of Ephemerality, on April 25 through Pelagic Records. The first track from the album, “Ephemeral,” along with an accompanying video, is now available. The video, directed and edited by Clara Griot, features scenes documenting the album’s creation in locations including two recording studios, La Soulane in the Pyrénées, and the historic Gesu church in Toulouse.
The album reflects on the societal implications of technological dependence, using both modern and traditional instruments to create a contrasting sonic environment. Key elements include modular synthesizers, a 150-year-old organ, classical arrangements, and contributions from collaborators in the Toulouse music scene, such as members of Slift, Plebian Grandstand, Mourir, Zelezna, and Orne. The recording process involved capturing the acoustics of a 160-year-old church, enhancing the album’s connection to physical space as a compositional element.
Formed in 2016 in France, BRUIT ≤ emerged from the dissolution of various major-label pop projects. Seeking independence from commercial constraints, the band initially focused on studio work. The 2018 Monolith EP, released by Elusive Sound, marked their transition to live performance, including a tour across France and Belgium.
Their debut album, The Machine is Burning and Now Everyone Knows It Could Happen Again, was released digitally in 2021 and later through Pelagic Records. The album enabled extensive touring across Europe, with appearances at events like Roadburn, ArcTanGent, Amplifest, Dunk, and Damnation, and performances alongside groups such as Amenra and EZ3kiel.
In 2023, the group released Apologie du temps perdu vol.1 (Pelagic Records), an EP that reflected on themes of time and its passage. During this period, BRUIT ≤ joined the live band of M83, led by Anthony Gonzalez, contributing to performances and musical direction.
The album’s development began while touring with M83, with initial compositions crafted during breaks. The band retreated to the Pyrénées mountains to finalize the material before recording in Toulouse. The project involved a combination of acoustic and digital techniques, emphasizing contrasts between eras of technology.
BRUIT ≤ has maintained its boycott of major streaming platforms, including Spotify, citing concerns over artist compensation and the company’s investment in arms manufacturing. The Age Of Ephemerality continues this stance, emphasizing the band’s commitment to ethical principles.
