Fifty years after the May 1975 debut at Sheffield Students Union Refectory, Stephen Mallinder and Chris Watson have documented the 2025 iteration of Cabaret Voltaire. The live album, But What Time Is It Really?, arrives 24 April 2026 via Memetune, capturing a line-up that included Eric Random and Oliver Harrap.

The tracklist focuses on reconstructed versions of ‘Sensoria’, ‘Crackdown’, ‘Do Right’, and ‘Spies in the Wires’, alongside Watson’s musique concrète piece ‘Tinsley Viaduct’. The technical assembly of the record involved Benge on mixing duties and James Trevasus for mastering, with visuals by Dan Conway and Paul Burgess providing the foundation for the artwork.
The recordings originated during a 2025 tour, featuring reconstructed versions of ‘Sensoria’, ‘Crackdown’, ‘Do Right’, and ‘Spies in the Wires’. These are set against Watson’s ‘Tinsley Viaduct’, a piece of musique concrète. The album’s technical assembly involved Benge on mixing and James Trevasus on mastering, with the visual identity provided by Dan Conway and Paul Burgess.
A final series of performances has been scheduled to conclude the project. The North American dates begin in May on the West Coast, moving to the East Coast in September, where Tara Busch of I Speak Machine will occupy the position of Watson on synths and samples. The UK leg, scheduled for October, features Elizabeth Bernholz, performing as Gazelle Twin, as the opening act.
Stephen Mallinder, a founding member of the group in 1973, has maintained a trajectory through solo electronics on Night School and collaborations within Wrangler and Sola. Chris Watson departed the initial group in 1981, moving from the industrial experiments of The Hafler Trio to a career in location sound recording. His work for the BBC Natural History Unit and solo releases on Touch focuses on the acoustics of wildlife and environmental phenomena.
But What Time Is It Really? will be distributed through the Cabs store, Bandcamp, and at tour venues on vinyl and CD.
