A classically trained cellist turned indie-pop songwriter, Cello pulls from post-punk and art-rock on her latest release

Cello, a Brighton-based solo artist, has released “Like a Tiger,” her third single and the latest preview of her debut album Kung Fu Disco, due in autumn 2026 on Barracuda Recordings.

The track is built on funk guitars over a heavy disco beat. In the artist’s own words, the song addresses the sensation of feeling like an outsider, “like an alien, like you don’t belong, and maybe you’re not even from here,” with the aim of reframing that estrangement as something to embrace.

Born from a background in classical music, she was nicknamed Cello after training as a cellist at the Junior Royal College of Music. Her stated influences range from Stevie Nicks and Lady Gaga to David Bowie, Eurythmics, Wire, and Blondie, alongside a family record collection that included heavy rock.

While working as a touring cellist, she met her producer and co-writer JB, a former engineer at EMIM Music Studios whose previous credits include Guru‘s Jazzmatazz, Primal Scream, Heavy Stereo, The House of Love, and Merz. The two met on the last train home from London.

Kung Fu Disco was written during lockdown and recorded at The Metway in Brighton, the studio associated with The Levellers.
