Chameleons Arctic Moon Features Seven New Tracks Including David Bowie Takes My Hand

Chameleons will issue Arctic Moon through Metropolis Records on September 12. The seven-track album represents their first full-length studio effort in 24 years and first with the current lineup. The release incorporates the recent single ‘Saviours Are A Dangerous Thing’, a re-recorded version of ‘Where Are You?’ from their 2024 single, and extended pieces including ‘David Bowie Takes My Hand’.

The band has positioned the material as progression rather than retreat. “There is an obvious maturity to the songwriting on this record,” bassist Mark Burgess stated in earlier interviews. The summer touring schedule covered both continents, with US dates alongside The Psychedelic Furs and UK appearances including Forever Now festival at Milton Keynes Bowl. The Guardian noted their “gnarled angst and integrity of Manchester’s ultimate cult band remains intact”.

North American dates begin shortly after the album launch, followed by mainland European shows from late October and UK tour dates in November.

The Manchester group formed in 1981 when Mark Burgess (formerly of the Cliches) joined with guitarists Dave Fielding and Reg Smithies, plus drummer John Lever. The original incarnation disbanded in 1987, with tensions between Burgess and Fielding particularly cited. Their initial three-album run produced Script of the Bridge (1983), What Does Anything Mean? Basically (1985) and Strange Times (1986). A reunion occurred in 2000 with Why Call It Anything? before the group disbanded again following John Lever‘s death and Dave Fielding‘s departure. The current formation assembled in 2021 and released two EPs in 2024: Where Are You? with three new compositions and Tomorrow Remember Yesterday containing five re-recorded archive tracks.
