Cosey Fanni Tutti’s album 2t2 reflects on personal loss recent collaborations and past material

The release follows a period of extended solo work and picks up threads from 2019’s TUTTI.

Written, performed, and produced by Cosey herself, 2t2 comprises nine tracks: Curæ, To Be, Stound, Never The Same, Stolen Time, Respair, Threnody, Sonance, and Limbic. The album is split between two poles—one side driven by rhythm, the other more subdued and introspective—though both are informed by the same source material: personal loss, reflection, and continued political instability.

Material across 2t2 intersects with recent strands of her output. Threnody is dedicated to Delia Derbyshire and Andy Christian, the latter having created a drawing under the same title during an impromptu session with Derbyshire involving voice and visual improvisation. The track also ties in with Cosey’s soundtrack to Delia Derbyshire: The Myths and the Legendary Tapes, directed by Caroline Catz. Elsewhere, the album draws connections with her 2022 book RE-SISTERS, which is also due to appear in a Spanish-language edition.

The overtone chanting heard in Stound traces back to what she describes as a means of grounding and reaching into physical and emotional depth—part of a wider methodology that views sound as a means of self-connection rather than escape. While the record emerges from a period marked by grief and instability, Cosey points to the function of memory and shared experience as a form of persistence rather than nostalgia.

The visual identity of 2t2 is presented as a kind of sonic cameo—intended less as metaphor and more as an articulation of the interlinking nature of her work in sound, performance, and writing.

Born Christine Carol Newby in 1951, Cosey Fanni Tutti has been active across music, performance, and visual art since the early 1970s. She first gained attention through her work with COUM Transmissions, the performance art group she co-founded with Genesis P-Orridge, and later as a core member of Throbbing Gristle, whose early experiments would influence what came to be known as industrial music. In the early 1980s, she formed Chris & Cosey with Chris Carter, producing a long sequence of electronic and techno-influenced releases.

Parallel to her music and art practice, she has published two books through Faber. The first, Art Sex Music (2017), was shortlisted for the Penderyn Music Book Prize. The second, RE-SISTERS (2022), draws historical and personal parallels between three women—Saint Teresa of Ávila, Delia Derbyshire, and Cosey herself—through the lens of control, resistance, and gendered marginality.
