Squid’s Cowards releases on Warp Records in early February

The English art rock group Squid will release their third album, Cowards, on February 7, 2025, through Warp Records. This album centers on themes of malevolence, marking a continuation of Squid’s exploration of complex and darker subject matter.

The album’s lead single, “Crispy Skin,” includes a music video directed by Takashi Ito, a Japanese filmmaker recognized for his experimental visual techniques. The video incorporates elements from Ito’s experimental short film Zone (1995).

Cowards will be available for pre-order in several formats: standard black and clear vinyl, CD, and cassette. The vinyl and cassette formats are limited to 200 copies exclusively through Squid’s official store. Additionally, a deluxe vinyl edition will include a poster and a bonus 10” record featuring exclusive material.

Takashi Ito (伊藤 高志) is a Japanese experimental filmmaker noted for his distinctive use of stop-motion and time-lapse techniques. His works from the 1980s and 1990s, such as Ghost and Zone, are characterized by their surreal, immersive qualities that blend reality with abstraction. Born in 1956 in Fukuoka, Japan, Ito studied at Kyushu Institute of Design, where he began experimenting with unique cinematic forms. Zone, created in 1995, won acclaim for its innovative approach to space and movement, and continues to be recognized in the field of experimental cinema. His collaborations often extend to various art forms, including music videos and art installations.
