The Los Angeles musician and horror effects artist built the video’s grotesque politician mask herself using repurposed 3D-printed moulds

CrowJane, the solo project of Los Angeles-based musician and horror makeup artist Galipo, has released “Reign,” a post-punk single on Kitten Robot Records. The track is described in the press release as influenced by Suicide, the New York no-wave duo, with arrangements built around synthesizer sounds recorded at the studio of pianist and engineer Paul Roessler, a former member of the Screamers. Among the instruments used was a Steiner-Parker Synthacon, the same model Roessler played during his time with the Screamers.

The accompanying video was directed by visual artist Jessica Moncrief, a collaborator on previous CrowJane releases, and shot in two locations: Moncrief’s living room against a black backdrop and her backyard. The central visual conceit involves CrowJane moving from captive to aggressor in relation to a grotesque politician character, with imagery including the burning of an American flag by the oligarch character and the burning of a white flag of surrender by CrowJane herself.

The antagonist wears a silicone old-man mask fabricated by Galipo herself, repurposed from a test mould originally created for a separate client using a 3D printer, repainted for the video.

Galipo’s professional background as a makeup and effects artist includes work on Ryan Murphy’s Monster anthology series, Welcome to Chippendales, The Last of Us: Part II, Star Wars: Jedi: Fallen Order, Joker: Folie à Deux, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. She has been active in the Los Angeles underground music scene for roughly a decade through bands including Egrets on Ergot, Prissy Whip, and The Deadbeats. The CrowJane project began with the 2020 debut album Mater Dolorosa.

“Reign” is the first release in a series of planned singles leading to a full-length album, with additional music videos expected.
