Daisy Rickman Band to perform at the album release event alongside Samana and Lucy Gooch

The second album by musician and artist Daisy Rickman, Howl, is scheduled for a wider release on Sunburst vinyl. The record will be issued by the Weird Walk Record Cult on October 28th.

The release date coincides with Weird Walk’s “Samhain Ritual” event at Earth in London. The Daisy Rickman Band is set to perform, alongside Samana and Lucy Gooch. The event also includes Tree Carr and will be guided by the comedian Stewart Lee. A DJ set by Paul Hartnoll’s Folk Horror Electro Techno Disco is scheduled to follow the live performances. The event is organised with the support of The Ffern Folk Foundation.

The album’s title, Howl, is the Cornish word for “Sun”. Its songs were written between the winter solstice of 2020 and Beltane of 2023. The material was recorded at Rickman’s home in Cornwall and during a period spent in Dorset. The lyrics are in both English and Cornish.

Daisy Rickman is a multi-instrumentalist, painter, and filmmaker based in Cornwall. Her work incorporates the Cornish language and themes connected to folklore and the natural landscape. She plays multiple instruments, including guitar, sitar, cello, and banjo. Her first album, Donsya a’n Loryow, was self-released in 2022. She directs and produces her own music videos.

Rickman performs all instrumentation on the album. The credited instruments include acoustic and 12-string guitars, double bass, drums, percussion, sitar, cello, bouzouki, banjo, accordion, clarinet, fiddle, and synthesizer. Rickman stated of her recording process that it is a realm where different parts of one’s musical self can talk to each other and play.

The record’s sleeve features oil paintings by Rickman. The front cover is her 2021 work Benow Howl, which translates from Cornish as “Feminine Sun”. The painting was created during the same period as some of the album’s songs and was influenced by the work of artist Hilma af Klint.
