Dälek return with The Essence and announce tour

Dälek have released a new track, “The Essence”, ahead of their European tour scheduled for May. The single, available via dalek.lnk.to/essence, arrives while the group is still in the studio working on the follow-up to their 2022 album Precipice. The track draws on a reduced palette: MPC 3000, processed guitar, and a lyrical structure that guides the arrangement.

In a statement, dälek (MC Dälek and Mike Manteca) explained the track’s construction as stripped-down, recorded with minimal overdubs. It marks a return to earlier methods, using foundational tools while preserving the density associated with their sound. According to the group, the song retains their layered production approach but limits the components to those deemed essential.

“The Essence” features verses structured around historical reference and political assertion. One line reads: “We had civilizations interconnected throughout history / Our art and architecture composed with sacred symmetry.” The release aligns with their ongoing work in the studio and precedes a live return to European stages. Dälek originated in Union City, New Jersey in 1997. The group was initially formed by Will Brooks (MC Dälek), with Mike Manteca (also known as Mike Mare) later taking over electronics and production duties. Past collaborators have included Oktopus (Alap Momin) and turntablist Still (Joshua Booth). The project developed within the underground hip-hop and experimental scenes, intersecting with noise, industrial, and shoegaze aesthetics. Their work references influences from Public Enemy, My Bloody Valentine, Kraftwerk, and Faust, and they have shared stages with Mogwai, Melt-Banana, The Melvins, and Isis. Releases span labels such as Ipecac Recordings, Profound Lore, and Southern Records, including titles like Absence (2005), Abandoned Language (2007), and Endangered Philosophies (2017).
