March 28 Sees Release of Volcanic Tongue by Disciples
Volcanic Tongue – A Time-Travelling Evangelist’s Guide to Late 20th Century Underground Music is a compilation album by Various Artists, set to be released on March 28, 2025. The compilation features twenty selections curated by David Keenan, released to coincide with the publication of his book of collected music writing titled Volcanic Tongue. The tracks encompass a range of genres, including outsider synth, psych-folk, and damaged rock ‘n’ roll, with recordings spanning from 1968 to 2013. This collection highlights a diverse array of underground avant-garde music.
The vinyl edition includes printed inner sleeves containing original notes on each artist by David Keenan. The sleeve design is created by Julian House, known for his work with Broadcast, Ghost Box Records, and Blood & Fire. Artists featured on the compilation include Ashtray Navigations, The Bachs, Idea Fire Company, A To Austr, Christina Carter, JD Emmanuel, and Circuit Des Yeux.
A book titled Volcanic Tongue, authored by David Keenan, is published by White Rabbit Books on March 6, 2025. The book compiles Keenan’s reviews, interviews, and analytical pieces on music. It includes exclusive interviews with Nick Cave, members of Coil and Throbbing Gristle, Faust, Shirley Collins, Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine, Einstürzende Neubauten, and others.
The book offers discographical analyses of Sonic Youth and John Fahey, extensive writings on free jazz, and detailed examinations of artists such as Pere Ubu, Public Image Ltd during the “Metal Box” era, Sun Ra, and John Martyn. A limited edition deluxe version is available exclusively in independent book and record stores and includes a CD version of the compilation album.
An official launch event for both the Volcanic Tongue book and compilation album will take place at Cafe OTO in London on March 25, 2025. The event will feature live performances by Monopoly Child Star Searchers, Richard Youngs, and Evan Parker. Additionally, David Keenan will engage in a conversation with Jennifer Lucy Allan, there will be a book reading by Richard Milward, and a DJ set by Disciples.
David Keenan is an author, writer, and music critic with an extensive portfolio focusing on underground and avant-garde music. He has authored multiple books that analyze and document various music genres and movements. From 2005 to 2015, Keenan co-operated the Volcanic Tongue record shop in Glasgow with Heather Leigh, promoting contemporary DIY music globally. The shop released limited runs on homemade CD-Rs and highlighted forgotten artists who previously released music through private press LPs. Keenan also managed the shop’s weekly mailing list, providing updates on new arrivals and featuring a “record of the week” known as a “tip of the tongue.” His contributions to music writing include reviews, interviews, and in-depth analyses, culminating in his book Volcanic Tongue and other published works that explore the evolution and impact of revolutionary music from the twentieth century.
