New Music From Human Impact and Cinema Cinema Members in Deaf Doula

Jim Coleman and Ev Gold have formed a new project named Deaf Doula. Their first track, “2057”, is now available digitally. A live performance is scheduled for November 16th at Pianos in New York City.

The project originated during the pandemic period as a collaboration between Coleman, of Cop Shoot Cop and Human Impact, and Gold, of Cinema Cinema and GoJuMo. Their work is described as involving tactile experimentation. The stated sound incorporates ambient, industrial, noise, and electroacoustic elements.

According to Jim Coleman, the track “2057” contains themes of a foreboding future rooted in present conditions, and includes audio of children in war-affected countries. He states, “the only way to do that is to create our own reality. And so we make music – to escape and to live.” Ev Gold notes that “2057” was the fifteenth song written for the initial recordings and was not originally planned for release. He describes its sound as having an “ice-cold aura” and being “bleak and matter-of-fact.”

Jim Coleman is a musician and composer, a member of the New York noise rock group Cop Shoot Cop and more recently Human Impact. He has also released work under the name Phylr and composed for film. Ev Gold is the vocalist and guitarist for the duo Cinema Cinema. The band has released multiple albums and worked with producer Martin Bisi.

The November 16th performance at Pianos is part of the Stereo Mandrax series. The live show is intended to be an “electro-acoustic hybrid” that will use real-time processing and include improvisation alongside composed material. Gold stated that live activity gives “flesh for the soul of the project to inhabit.”
