Bella Union schedules Insatiable by Divide and Dissolve for release

The new album by Divide and Dissolve, titled Insatiable, is scheduled for release on 18 April 2025 via Bella Union. The concept behind Insatiable stems from a dream experienced by Takiaya Reed, the band’s multi-instrumentalist and composer. The title refers to the human inclination toward either destructive or compassionate behaviors. According to Reed, the album examines these tendencies and emphasizes the emotional impact of pursuing paths connected to community, ancestral memory, and anti-colonial thought. Reed describes the record as composed through patterns and repetition that symbolize continual efforts toward change, especially through expressions of self-love and collective resilience.

The album’s compositional structure integrates doom metal with experimental instrumentation, including saxophone passages and minimal vocal input. Several tracks follow mirrored structures, relying on recurring musical motifs across approximately 30 minutes of material. According to Reed, the arrangement was designed to reject the idea of permanence, particularly in relation to the effects of colonization and racial violence. “Monolithic” addresses this theme explicitly.

The piece “Grief” includes processed vocals by Reed for the first time in the project’s history, with lyrics reflecting loss and solitude. “Loneliness,” meanwhile, explores the psychological impact of marginalization and isolation. The final track, “Death Cult,” closes the album with references to cultural survival and resistance to imposed narratives of inevitability and suffering.

Takiaya Reed is a composer and multi-instrumentalist based in the United States. She is a member of Divide and Dissolve, a duo originally formed in Melbourne, Australia. The group was established with Sylvie Nehill, a percussionist and collaborator in the early works of the project. Reed, who is of Black and Cherokee descent, often incorporates themes of anti-colonialism, resistance, and Indigenous sovereignty into her compositions. Her primary instruments include guitar, saxophone, and various effects. Divide and Dissolve’s releases have been characterized by their heavy use of low frequencies, extended instrumental sections, and sparse or absent vocals. Outside of her musical activities, Reed has addressed issues such as racial justice and environmental destruction in interviews and public statements.

The band’s previous works include albums such as Gas Lit (2021) and Systemic (2023), which were distributed internationally and received attention for their integration of doom metal aesthetics with political themes. Reed’s musical style often incorporates elements from free jazz, classical minimalism, and drone, aligning with her stated intention to create sound structures that confront systems of domination through nonverbal means.
