OUS to release Music From A Room Full of Synths by Dorian Concept

Oliver Johnson, known by his stage name Dorian Concept, is releasing a new EP titled Music From A Room Full of Synths. The record is set to be released on December 6, 2024, through the Swiss label OUS. The EP was recorded during a residency at the Swiss Museum for Electronic Music Instruments (SMEM) in 2020 and features music created exclusively with vintage synthesizers and hardware. The album’s production was conducted entirely in real time, avoiding sequencing or programming.

Dorian Concept is an Austrian electronic musician, producer, and multi-instrumentalist born in Vienna. Over the years, he has collaborated with artists such as Flying Lotus, Thundercat, and Kenny Beats. His music often incorporates complex melodies and unconventional structures, drawing on his background as a self-taught pianist and his interest in electronic experimentation. Before this EP, he released albums on labels like Brainfeeder and Ninja Tune, contributing significantly to experimental electronic music.

The Swiss Museum for Electronic Music Instruments, where this project was recorded, houses a collection of thousands of keyboards, synthesizers, and electronic music devices dating back to the 1950s. This setting offered a unique opportunity to engage with rare equipment.

Music From A Room Full of Synths was recorded over ten days at SMEM. Johnson utilized an array of vintage synthesizers and equipment, favoring an intuitive, live-performance-based approach. The EP emphasizes imperfections and quirks inherent to older instruments. Johnson’s production eschews technical programming in favor of spontaneous performance, resulting in free-form arrangements and raw sound textures.
