The band Prison will release its second album, Downstate, on January 31, 2025. This follow-up to their 2023 debut, Upstate, introduces an array of genre-infused compositions. Alongside the album announcement, Prison released the lead single, “Eyes For Keys,” with an accompanying music video directed by Johnny Celentano.
Active since 2015, Prison initially gained attention with Upstate, a record defined by extended, genre-spanning tracks. Recorded in Rockaway, the new album Downstate features central members Sarim Al-Rawi, Matt Lilly, and Paul Major, along with contributions from Marc Razo and Adam Reich on guitar, bassist Matt Leibowitz, and trombonist Dave Smoota Smith. The album also includes vocals and guitar by the late Sam Jayne, marking his last recording contribution.
Downstate incorporates a variety of musical styles, from distorted rock and psychedelic elements to blues influences. The group’s latest work draws inspiration from artists like Guru Guru, the Stooges, and No Trend, delivering an eclectic mix that combines minimalist and energetic arrangements.
