Tiny Magnetic Pets Rework Their Own Songs on the Astralux EP

Retrofuturista premieres the “Astralux” EP by Tiny Magnetic Pets, three tracks out August 21st, pointing the Irish trio toward a darker, more cinematic sound. The band is Paula Gilmer (vocals), Sean Quinn (keyboards, guitar) and Eugene Somers (drums), working between Dublin and Belfast, joined here by Seamus Quinn on bass.

The lead track, “Lost My Guiding Light (Again),” reworks a song from their second album “Deluxe/Debris.” Sean Quinn says the band rearranged it for a Dublin dance festival, it became their live opener, and the 2026 re-recording earned its own title, a nod to Bowie’s “John, I’m Only Dancing (Again).” Paula Gilmer ties the song to losing direction, in life, work, faith, relationships, and asks listeners what their own guiding light is in 2026.

Two remixes of “Low Places,” from 2025’s “Harmonious Grey” EP, complete the release, produced with Paul Dakeyne, a Ministry of Sound resident DJ with over 250 remix credits including George Michael, The Cure and New Order, endorsed by Paul Oakenfold and Fatboy Slim. Mixing and mastering came from Tim Dorney of Republica.

Since forming in 2015, Tiny Magnetic Pets were championed early on by Rusty Egan, of Blitz Club and Visage. A later connection with OMD‘s Andy McCluskey led to two European tours supporting the band. Live credits since then include support slots for Midge Ure, VNV Nation and Dave Keuning of The Killers, alongside festival bills shared with Human League (read our interview with Martyn Ware), Michael Rother (NEU! – read our interview with Michael Rother), Wolfgang Flür (formerly of Kraftwerk), Mesh and Killing Joke. Two reworked tracks are a small sample, but “Astralux” holds together well enough to make the album worth waiting for.
