Lloyd describes the song as focused on avoidance, disconnection, and the sustained performance of composure. The track was written using a borrowed guitar and a VOX amplifier found powered up in a rehearsal space. Its structure emerged during rehearsal without external direction, later assembled with a second guitar part from Boyer.
Unwound is his first studio album for Reveal, following earlier solo work released via Warp Records and self-distributed platforms. The 12-track album was recorded in part at Analogue Catalogue Studios in Northern Ireland with Julie McLarnon, and partly at Lloyd’s home studio in Newcastle upon Tyne. Tom English and Jemma Freese, both of Maxïmo Park, contributed drums and keyboards respectively.
Lloyd’s solo catalogue includes Seeing Double (2007), I O U O M E (2017), and Outside Notion (2019), as well as the retrospective compilation Green Grows Devotion (2022) and the EP series Fun City (2024). In 2019, he began discussions with Reveal manager Tom Rose, who suggested issuing Lloyd’s archive material, eventually leading to this new album.
Outside of solo work, Lloyd remains the guitarist and one of the principal songwriters in Maxïmo Park, active since the early 2000s and associated with Warp’s short-lived guitar label offshoot. He also records with Nano Kino, alongside vocalist and collaborator Sarah Suri.
