Fifth Ishibashi and O’Rourke collaboration reassembled from European tour material
The recordings that form Pareidolia, scheduled for release on August 29, 2025 via Drag City, were assembled from live material recorded during a short 2023 European tour. The performances took place in France, Switzerland, Italy, and Ireland. Each show involved real-time improvisation using laptops, live flute (from Eiko Ishibashi), and intermittent harmonica contributions from both musicians. The audio signals were routed and captured for further manipulation after each set, creating a feedback loop between live performance and later reconstruction. The album draws from this archive, reshuffling moments across cities — with segments recorded in one country recombined against others — forming what appears to be a provisional mixdown of that process.

Description: Eiko Ishibashi and Jim O’Rourke release Pareidolia on Drag City, August 29, built from improvised recordings made during a 2023 European tour.
This is the fifth collaborative release between Ishibashi and Jim O’Rourke. Their work is not pre-planned; instead, it emerges from a process of silent preparation followed by unrehearsed live interaction. Pareidolia does not document one specific show, but rather functions as a composite, re-edited from the material accumulated during the tour. The result is not presented as a document, but as an additional version — compiled after the fact from fragments that were themselves already part of an open-ended series.
The word “pareidolia” refers to the perception of familiar patterns — often faces or figures — within unrelated stimuli. The album carries that concept into its construction. A short edit of the title track has been released ahead of the album.
Eiko Ishibashi is a Japanese composer, multi-instrumentalist, and producer. Her solo discography includes albums on Drag City, Editions Mego, and Black Truffle. She has collaborated extensively with musicians including Keiji Haino, Merzbow, Damon & Naomi, and Masami Akita, and composed the score for Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s film Drive My Car (2021), which won the Best Screenplay award at Cannes and an Academy Award for Best International Feature Film.
Jim O’Rourke, originally from the United States and based in Japan since the early 2000s, has worked across genres, from musique concrète to rock. He played with Sonic Youth from 1999 to 2005 and has released solo albums on Drag City, including Eureka (1999), Insignificance (2001), and the ongoing Steamroom series. He has produced and mixed records for Wilco, Stereolab, Joanna Newsom, and others. His collaborations include projects with Fennesz, Peter Rehberg, and Gastr del Sol with David Grubbs.
