I Shall Exterminate Everything Around Me: Electric Six’s 2007 Album Gets First Vinyl Pressing
A busy signal is not an obvious starting point for one of the most covered songs of the last sixty years. Harry Nilsson wrote “One” in 1968 after staying on the line long enough to turn the repeating tone into a melody; the result has since accumulated over 45 recorded versions, ranging from Three Dog Night‘s 1969 Billboard top five hit to Filter‘s 1998 reinterpretation for the first X-Files film, in which the lyrics were redirected toward the Cigarette Smoking Man, to Aimee Mann‘s version opening Magnolia the following year. Belinda Carlisle recorded it as recently as 2025.

Description: The Detroit band's cover of the 1968 Nilsson classic was originally recorded for a video game advertising campaign and surfaces now as a bonus track on a remastered double LP.
It surfaces now as a single (27th March 2026, Metropolis Records), bonus track on the remastered reissue of the band’s 2007 fourth album. The song itself has a longer history: Nilsson wrote it in 1968 after holding the line on a busy signal long enough to hear a melody in the tone. Over 45 versions have followed, from Three Dog Night‘s 1969 Billboard top five hit to Filter‘s 1998 X-Files commission, in which the lyrics were rerouted toward the Cigarette Smoking Man, to Aimee Mann‘s version opening Magnolia the following year, to Belinda Carlisle‘s 2025 recording.
The album itself, now appearing for the first time on vinyl as a double LP pressed on translucent ruby red, was framed by Valentine at the time of its original release as a record saturated in excess by design: the cabaret opener “It’s Showtime!”, the self-consciously Coldplay-adjacent “When I Get to the Green Building,” the new wave and stoner rock collision of “Dirty Looks.” The reissue adds five bonus tracks from the band’s archives, of which the Nilsson cover is one.
Electric Six formed in Detroit in 1996. The 2003 singles “Danger! High Voltage” and “Gay Bar,” both from debut album Fire, gave the band a foothold in the UK charts and established a template: garage rock, disco, new wave, and a comic register precise enough to avoid novelty but loose enough to wrong-foot anyone expecting sincerity. Valentine has remained the group’s constant; the lineup around him has shifted across a catalogue now running to well over a dozen studio albums.
North American dates run from 29th April to 23rd May 2026, followed by an appearance at Download Festival District X on 11th June and a UK tour from 12th to 28th June. The reissue is out 8th May via Metropolis Records.
