Description: Gazelle Twin announces Shadow Dogs, a collaborative album reimagining tracks from Black Dog, featuring BEAK>, Gary Numan, and more.

Gazelle Twin, the performance persona of composer and producer Elizabeth Bernholz, has announced the release of a new album titled “Shadow Dogs.” The album features reworkings and reinterpretations of tracks from her 2023 album “Black Dog.” Set for release on 18 October 2024 through Invada Records, “Shadow Dogs” includes contributions from several notable artists, including Keeley Forsyth, Gary Numan, Mark Jenkin, Marta Salogni, Penelope Trappes, Sealionwoman, and BEAK>.

“Shadow Dogs” is described as a collection of “ghost” or “shadow” versions of tracks from “Black Dog,” a concept that Bernholz has developed around her interest in the intersection of audiovisual technology and the notion of ghosts. She cited early experiments with EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomena) and the “ghosting” effects seen on early television screens as inspirations for this project. The album aims to create a new body of work by inviting various musicians to reinterpret her original compositions.

The project is launched with BEAK>’s version of the track “Fear Keeps Us Alive.” Billy Fuller of BEAK> (read our interview with Billy Fuller) expressed the band’s honor in being invited to participate in the album, noting that they approached the reworking as if they were performing it live with Gazelle Twin.

“Black Dog,” Gazelle Twin’s fourth studio album, delves into themes of childhood fears and their manifestations in adulthood. The album has been performed live at several festivals, including Rewire, Donau, Simple Things, and Supersonic Festival. On 1 November 2024, a special performance of “Black Dog” is scheduled to take place at the British Library in London, where Gazelle Twin and Max de Wardener will collaborate with the London Contemporary Orchestra under the direction of Robert Ames. This performance will open the British Library’s new season, “Tales of the Weird: An Autumnal Festival.”

In addition to her music projects, Gazelle Twin has also contributed to the stage adaptation of the British horror film “Saint Maud,” with music composed by her. The play, adapted by Jessica Andrews, will premiere at the Live Theatre in Newcastle upon Tyne on 10 October 2024.

Recently, Gazelle Twin worked with Factory International on their production of “Robin/Red/Breast,” a new interpretation of John Bowen’s cult television play “Robin Redbreast.” This project followed her collaboration with Maxine Peake on the audio installation “We Wax. We Shall Not Wane,” commissioned by Somerset House for The Horror Show Exhibition in 2022.

Gazelle Twin’s body of work also includes a live EP titled “Black Dog Live,” recorded at the ACCA in Brighton, which features raw versions of tracks like “Two Worlds,” “Fear Keeps Us Alive,” “A Door Opens,” and “Unstoppable Force.”

Elizabeth Bernholz created the Gazelle Twin persona in 2009 as a means to challenge conventional norms within the music industry, particularly those affecting women. Her work spans studio albums, soundtracks, art installations, and live performances, often featuring identity-warping personas that explore powerful emotional themes.
