Mick Turner, Joel Silbersher and Guy Maddison Form Fancy Weapon

Fancy Weapon’s self-titled debut is out today on Poison City. The album is the work of Mick Turner, Claire Birchall, Joel Silbersher, and Guy Maddison, whose credits include Dirty Three, Mudhoney, GOD, and Lubricated Goat, among others.

Turner has been doing this since 1979, when he played guitar in the hardcore band Sick Things under the name Mick Sick. He went through the Moodists and Venom P. Stinger before founding Dirty Three in 1992, a band he still plays in, on a label, Anchor & Hope, that he still runs. He has also been showing visual art in galleries since 2003. Apparently one band has never been enough: in 2025 alone he started both Mess Esque, with Helen Franzmann, and Bleak Squad, with Adalita, Mick Harvey and Marty Brown.

Silbersher wrote “My Pal” for GOD in the late eighties, a song odd enough to get covered later by Dinosaur Jr and Bonnie Prince Billy. He spent the following three decades, 1990 to 2019, in Hoss, recorded as one half of Tendrils with Charlie Owen, and put out a solo record, Greasy Lens, in 2002.

Maddison played bass on Lubricated Goat’s Paddock of Love, then in Bloodloss alongside Mark Arm, then, since 2001, in Mudhoney, where he still is. Off stage he works as a critical care nurse at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, which is not a detail most bass players can offer.

The album follows three singles: Birchall sang “Squid” and “27 Minutes”, Silbersher took “Squirmin’ Merman”. The band has played recent shows opening for Mogwai and Tortoise, and this week Mojo gave the record four stars and a Mojo Rising feature, calling Turner’s new band a promising one built out of the Australian post-punk underground.
