Description: Fever Ray announces The Year of the Radical Romantics live album July 25 via Rabid Records. New therapy session video for Now's the Only Time I Know.

The album contains live-to-tape studio recordings of tracks from Radical Romantics alongside selections from 2017’s Plunge and reworked versions of earlier material. The recordings feature the touring lineup that accompanied Karin Dreijer: Minna Koivisto on keyboards, Romarna Campbell on drums, Maryam Nikandish and Helena Gutarra on keytars and vocals.

A new single “Now’s the Only Time I Know (Therapy Session)” arrives today with an accompanying video. The track represents one of two therapy session-themed videos directed by Martin Falck for the project. These videos expand on the character universe established in the Radical Romantics campaign, featuring the white-suited Fever Ray figure alongside Romance, Main, Snusis, and Demona Lisa in sessions led by therapist Ebba.

The therapy session format provides a framing device for new interpretations of material from Fever Ray’s 2009 debut album, including today’s single and “I’m Not Done (Therapy Session)”. The sessions position the established characters in a group therapy environment while the tracks receive what the announcement describes as “blistering” reworkings.

A publication of the same name accompanies the album release. The book, designed and edited by Dreijer and Falck, documents the development of the Radical Romantics visual universe through sketches, trial imagery, and behind-the-scenes photography. Nina Andersson contributed press photography and cover shoot material to the publication.

Falck’s statement on the publication references the character development process: “Creating the characters for the Radical Romantics era has been a true labor of love. Bringing them to life, watching them experience love, heartbreak, death, and even getting fired, has been an absolute joy.”

The therapist character Ebba provides commentary in the announcement materials, positioned as addressing the other characters: “You left mid session… I really think you’re in big, big need of my services. I want this room to be… a sacred place, for healing. Your lives seem to be falling apart… it’s like you always want to go back there, drawn to the bottom of the ocean?”

Karin Dreijer was born on 7 April 1975 and worked as a Swedish singer-songwriter and record producer. Dreijer formed the electronic music duo the Knife with their brother Olof Dreijer and released their debut solo album under the alias Fever Ray in January 2009. The Knife disbanded in November 2014 after releasing their acclaimed 2013 album Shaking the Habitual and completing its attendant tour. Prior to the Knife, Dreijer performed in the band Honey Is Cool, with lyrics from some Honey Is Cool songs re-emerging in songs on the 2003 album Deep Cuts by The Knife. Dreijer’s vocal style is notable for both shrill and deep tones, and also the use of multitracked vocals with the use of pitch-shifting technology. Visually, they use masks, face and body paint, intricate costumes, and other theatrical elements in photo shoots, videos and live performances.

The Year of the Radical Romantics album and publication are available for pre-order now.
