The current lineup is a trio: Naoko Yamano on guitar and vocals, founding member and the only constant presence throughout the band’s history; Atsuko Yamano, Naoko’s sister, also a founding member, who returned in 2016 as bassist after leaving in 2006; and Risa Kawano on drums, formerly of the band Brinky, who has been with Shonen Knife since 2015.

The band was founded in Osaka in December 1981 by Naoko, her college friend Michie Nakatani, and Atsuko, then seventeen years old. Their first concert took place in Osaka in March 1982. The name comes from an old brand of pen knife marketed to Japanese boys. Stated influences include 1960s girl groups, the Beach Boys, and the Ramones; lyrics focus on sweets, animals, and everyday consumer goods. The debut album Burning Farm was released in 1983 and re-issued in the United States by K Records in 1985. In 1987 the band opened for Sonic Youth in Osaka and played outside Japan for the first time, in Los Angeles. In 1991 Kurt Cobain invited them to open Nirvana’s European tour. They signed with Capitol Records in 1992 and with Virgin Records in 1994, the same year they toured with Lollapalooza.
