Gastr del Sol Release Previously Unheard Studio Recording “The Bells of St. Mary’s”

Rare Gastr del Sol Studio Recording Surfaces After 25 Years

For fans of the influential post-rock band Gastr del Sol, a long wait is finally coming to an end. The band, originally a duo featuring David Grubbs and Jim O’Rourke, is set to release a new compilation album titled “We Have Dozens of Titles” on May 24, 2024.

This release isn’t entirely new material, but rather a treasure trove of previously unreleased recordings from Gastr del Sol’s active period between 1993 and 1998. The album will showcase a collection of unheard studio outtakes, alongside live performances captured during the band’s run.

One particularly interesting inclusion is a track from a Japan-only Christmas compilation album, offering a glimpse into a rarely explored creative space for Gastr del Sol.

Adding to the richness of the project, “We Have Dozens of Titles” features contributions from a who’s who of Chicago’s experimental music scene during that era. Musicians like Jeb Bishop, Bundy K. Brown, and Tortoise co-founder John McEntire all lent their talents to the recordings. Notably, Jim O’Rourke himself took the reins on mastering the album, ensuring a cohesive and high-quality listening experience.

“We Have Dozens of Titles” promises to be a fresh perspective on Gastr del Sol’s groundbreaking work. The album explores genres like post-rock, experimental rock, and even hints at their use of musique concrète techniques.
