The song, initially conceived as a discarded riff, was reworked repeatedly before settling into its current form. According to van Dessel, “We tried everything to not make it sound like this,” before ultimately returning to what had first emerged. The title is the result of a literal Dutch-to-English mistranslation during a conversation. Uschenko decided to keep it.

that Jesus follows Alive and 5 Gold Pieces, previous singles from the new record. Across these tracks, the band maintains their lo-fi, tape-saturated aesthetic. The recordings preserve environmental noise, tape hiss, and clipped frequencies. Most of the album was recorded on machines that were later sold.

Ghostwoman began as a solo effort by Evan Uschenko, a Canadian musician originally from Diamond City, Alberta. Prior to forming Ghostwoman, he played as a touring multi-instrumentalist with Michael Rault. In 2016, he started recording material under the Ghostwoman name, self-releasing music on cassette. His early recordings were primarily home-recorded, with lo-fi production and minimal overdubbing. After relocating to Europe, Uschenko met Belgian drummer Ille van Dessel, formerly of the group PINK ROOM. The two began collaborating, and the project shifted into a two-person operation.

The new record was written and recorded across rural locations in Canada and Belgium over a two-year period. Much of the equipment used was second-hand or semi-functional. Van Dessel has stated that their process relies on instinct rather than planning, often turning technical checks or scraps into full tracks.

Ghostwoman will tour Europe later in the year, with shows in cities including Birmingham, Leeds, Dublin, Glasgow, Manchester, Bristol, London, and Brighton.

Welcome to the Civilized World is available 5 September via Full Time Hobby.
