Description: Ghostwoman share "5 Gold Pieces" ahead of Welcome to the Civilized World album release September 5th via Full Time Hobby, plus European tour dates.

The track emerged from equipment testing rather than intentional songwriting. Evan Uschenko and Ille van Dessel were running diagnostics on a drum machine when the piece developed its own momentum. What began as technical checking became a complete song through accidental chemistry. The accompanying video, shot on 16mm film in a single afternoon session, was directed by Toon Persyn, who also handled cinematography. The band cite Chris Cunningham‘s aesthetic influence, though without his trademark organic grotesquerie.

Welcome to the Civilized World documents two years of recording across Canada and Belgium. The album emerged from sessions in Diamond City, Alberta, where Uschenko initially developed the project alone in an abandoned farmhouse. Later recordings took place in Edmonton before the project expanded internationally when Uschenko connected with Brussels-based drummer van Dessel. Additional material was captured in the Ardennes region during Belgium’s winter months, with the duo working in rural isolation.

Uschenko originally established Ghostwoman as a solo endeavor after years as a touring multi-instrumentalist. The debut release was self-produced and distributed on custom-dubbed cassette tapes. The project’s expansion occurred through Edmonton’s music community before Uschenko‘s relocation to Europe. His partnership with van Dessel crystallized after recognizing her drumming approach and commitment to uncompromising music creation.

The duo’s recording methodology involves acquiring vintage equipment, extracting its sonic possibilities, then selling and replacing it with different gear. This cycle ensures each recording session captures distinct tonal characteristics from aged instruments and machinery. Their tape machine appears to absorb environmental qualities from each location, whether domestic Canadian settings or isolated Belgian countryside.

The European tour launches September 4th in Paris before moving through Germany, Netherlands, United Kingdom, Ireland, Czech Republic, Austria, Switzerland and France. Notable venues include Berlin‘s Rough Trade, Amsterdam‘s Paradiso, London‘s The Garage, and multiple German cities including Hamburg, Leipzig and Munich.

Welcome to the Civilized World contains eleven tracks, including previously released material “Alive” and “Levon”.
