Golem Mecanique Pays Tribute to Pier Paolo Pasolini on New Album

Golem Mecanique, the musical project of French composer and multi-instrumentalist Karen Jebane, will release their third album, Siamo tutti in pericolo, in March 2025 on Ideologic Organ. The album is inspired by the life and work of Italian filmmaker and poet Pier Paolo Pasolini. Jebane, who has been active as Golem Mecanique since 2007, creates music that draws on diverse influences. Her sound incorporates elements of contemporary folk, microtonality, and early music, with touches of black metal and gothic music. Poetry is a central element of her work. Siamo tutti in pericolo takes its title from Pasolini’s last words, spoken in an interview shortly before his unsolved murder in 1975. The album is a musical response to Pasolini’s life, work, and death. Jebane channels the themes of fate, mourning, and loneliness through her music, creating what she describes as a “dark church” of sound built from poetry, literature, contemplation, mysticism, and darkness.

The album features Jebane’s signature use of the drone box, a mechanized hurdy-gurdy, and zither, which provide a foundation for her vocals. She also employs traditional musical forms and rhythms, such as the tarantella, in a minimalist style. The lyrics on the album undergo a process of “destruction,” with words degraded and their meanings obscured through sound modulation.

Karen Jebane began her musical career playing in bands as a teenager. Early in her solo work, she utilized tape recorders and field recordings to craft experimental songs. Influenced by composers such as John Cage, Pierre Schaeffer, Phill Niblock, and Alvin Lucier, she developed an interest in graphic scores and drone music. The drone box, built by French instrument maker Leo Maurel, became a key element in her music, allowing her to explore her voice within its sustained tones.
