Luther Dickinson and David Katznelson release Crow’s Nest Meditations

Gravel Springs, the collaborative project between guitarist Luther Dickinson (North Mississippi All Stars) and producer David Katznelson (Birdman Records), has released their debut album, Crow’s Nest Meditations. The album combines elements of ambient music, experimental drone, and acoustic instrumentation. It was released by Single Lock Records in a limited edition of 400 vinyl LPs with foil-stamped numbering, alongside digital formats.

The album was created over five years in Katznelson’s California home studio, a space known as the “Crow’s Nest,” perched above the San Anselmo hills. Sessions were conducted sporadically, combining Dickinson’s guitar techniques with Katznelson’s electronic and acoustic contributions.

Crow’s Nest Meditations draws inspiration from ambient and experimental music traditions. Influences include artists like William Basinski, Jóhann Jóhannsson, and The Deep Listening Band, alongside the textural innovations of Spacemen 3 and electronic releases from 1960s Nonesuch Records.

The album’s tracks are shaped by layered guitar techniques, droning electronics, and subtle acoustic interventions. These elements create a sonic environment described as bridging natural and otherworldly atmospheres.

Instruments used include guitars, electronics, a cello, hurdy-gurdy, and other unconventional sound tools. Tracks developed through improvisation, with feedback loops, acoustic melodies, and ambient drones forming the core of the compositions. The record features performances from both primary collaborators and members of their families. Jim Dickinson, Luther’s father, contributes spoken word on one track. Jim Dickinson was a highly regarded producer and musician who worked with artists such as Bob Dylan, Ry Cooder, and Big Star.

Luther Dickinson is a guitarist and producer with a career rooted in Southern blues and rock traditions. A founding member of the North Mississippi All Stars, he has also collaborated with The Black Crowes and other notable artists.

David Katznelson is a producer and founder of Birdman Records, known for his contributions to independent and experimental music. His projects often explore the boundaries of genre, and he has worked on records spanning a wide spectrum of styles.
