Description: Grouper Way Their Crept official repress (Kranky, 11.21.2025). Details on the 2005 debut LP/CD re-issue and Liz Harris biography.
The original pressing appeared on the artist’s own YELLOWELECTRIC label as a handful of handmade CD-Rs, followed by CD and vinyl editions from Free Porcupine and Type, respectively. Way Their Crept is an evanescent album, with dilated and rarefied atmospheres, which envelops the listener in this vaporous and impalpable world.
Grouper is the project of musician Elizabeth Anne Harris. Born in West Marin, California, on July 15, 1980, Harris later relocated to Astoria, Oregon. She graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Her early life was spent in a Fourth Way commune in the San Francisco Bay area, an environment that provided limited access to commercial music. Harris‘s musical output began in 2005 with a self-released CD-R titled Grouper. Subsequent notable albums include Dragging a Dead Deer Up a Hill (2008), the two-part album A I A (2011), and the piano-focused album Ruins (2014). She has released material on her own YELLOWELECTRIC label in addition to Root Strata, West 25th, Peak Oil, and Kranky. Collaborations include work with Xiu Xiu, The Bug, and duo projects Mirrorring (with Jesy Fortino of Tiny Vipers) and Raum (with Jefre Cantu-Ledesma).
