Can you tell us about your musical background and how you got started in the industry?

I started playing guitar around 12 or 13 and started writing songs immediately. I didn’t start recording until about 18. I guess when MySpace started I started posting stuff online and then I became a part of “The Industry”

How has your music evolved over the course of your career?

I’d say lyrically it’s matured the most. Some of my younger songs had more of a self pity vibe and were less abstract.

What inspired you to create the album “The CYST”?

I’m always writing. The Cyst was just the next album.

How do you balance experimenting with your music while still maintaining a distinct sound?

I’m not sure. I’m not trying to be too “experimental” or trying to challenge people. The music is supposed to be pleasant. As far as a distinct sound I just mix what I like and what I’m capable of doing.

How did your collaboration with Paul Roessler influence the sound of the album?

I’ve been recording with Paul for the past 12 + years. I wouldn’t really call it a collaboration. He is not involved in the writing process. Occasionally he’ll add some weird keyboard sounds if I suggest it needs it.

What was the biggest challenge you faced while producing it?

There were no unusual challenges.

How do you approach songwriting and what is your process for coming up with new material?

I usually sit at home and write some guitar or bass parts. Sometimes I will finish the whole song at home or I will come in with pieces to the studio and fill it in there. I never know what or how I’m going to sing until I’m in the studio and the basic music is recorded. Then I write the lyrics and figure out how I’m going to sing pretty quickly.

How would you describe the eclectic blend of music?

My music is kind of all over the place but Doom/stoner/sludge seems to always find its way in. I would like my music to be considered drug music.

Who are some of your biggest musical inspirations?

Harvey Milk, ButthOle Surfers, Liturgy, Bardo Pond, Earth, Phish

What are some of the biggest challenges you face as an experimental artist?

The biggest challenge I face is finding an audience.

Can you share any upcoming projects or plans for the future?

I have a new album finished that will be available the end of this year or next year on my whitewOrm label. Also, a band I drum and sing in called Skin Tag is back practicing again and we will play some shows and record an album this year.

How do you stay creative and motivated in the industry?

I am neither of those things right now.

Can you share some behind-the-scenes stories from the recording process of “The CYST”?

It’s just regular days of tracking.
