Description: Hayley and the Crushers release "Jewel Case," a 2016 live staple finally on record. First single off their forthcoming LP on Kitten Robot Records.
Written by frontwoman Hayley Cain in 2016, “Jewel Case” is described as one of the earliest songs in the Crushers’ catalogue. Despite never receiving a studio recording, it has closed every live set the band has played since its composition. The song was inspired by a specific incident: Cain accompanied a woman to a show, who was taken to hospital by ambulance after drinking heavily. “What struck me was how completely unapologetic she was,” Cain has said of the experience. “She couldn’t wait to do it all over again.” The lyrical focus is the moment of perceived personal limits and the decision whether to observe them.
The accompanying video was shot to replicate the band’s set-closing energy, forgoing production polish in favour of a performance-based format. “There’s always been a gap between our more polished records and what we actually are live,” Cain has noted, citing that gap as the motivation for the video’s approach.
Hayley and the Crushers formed in San Luis Obispo, California, and relocated to Detroit in 2022. The band’s current lineup consists of Hayley Cain (guitar, vocals), Dr. Cain Esq. (bass, vocals), Stacy Binelli (drums), and Ryan Deliso (lead guitar). They signed to Kitten Robot Records in 2021, a Los Angeles-based label run by new wave artist Josie Cotton. Their 2022 full-length Modern Adult Kicks was produced by Paul Roessler, a founding member of Los Angeles punk band The Screamers, whose production credits include TSOL, Josie Cotton, and Richie Ramone. In 2024 the band released the EP Unsubscribe from the Underground.
The band is currently on a Spring 2026 tour, with dates alongside Screeching Weasel and The Queers.
