BMG announces Heaven & Hell vinyl and CD retrospective March 27

The professional alignment of Ronnie James Dio, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Vinny Appice under the moniker Heaven & Hell between 2007 and 2009 resulted in a single studio LP and two live documents. On March 27, BMG (UK/EU) and Rhino (North America) issue Breaking Out Of Heaven 2007-2009, a retrospective formatted as a 7LP box set or a 4CD/Blu-ray configuration. This collection collates the recordings produced during the final three years of Dio’s life, a period initiated by the group’s decision to bypass the Black Sabbath name to focus exclusively on their shared material from the early 1980s.

The 2007 performance at New York’s Radio City Music Hall appears here in its full sequence on vinyl for the first time. The tracklist includes eight recordings making their vinyl debut, comprising studio material originally found on the 2007 compilation The Dio Years and various live captures. The 2009 studio album The Devil You Know and the subsequent live recording Neon Nights: 30 Years Of Heaven & Hell, filmed at the Wacken Open Air festival in Germany, complete the audio-visual history of this specific lineup.

The Blu-ray component contains the concert films for both the New York and Wacken dates. Supplemental material includes interviews conducted during the 30th anniversary of the Heaven & Hell album and a 2007 tour book replica. The physical editions are accompanied by a book featuring liner notes by Hugh Gilmour and a 2010 filmed tribute to Dio featuring Iommi, Appice, and Butler.

Heaven & Hell formed in 2006 following the recording of three new tracks for a Black Sabbath greatest hits collection. Ronnie James Dio first joined Black Sabbath in 1979, replacing Ozzy Osbourne for the albums Heaven and Hell (1980) and Mob Rules (1981) before departing in 1982. He returned for 1992’s Dehumanizer with Iommi, Butler, and Vinny Appice. Appice originally replaced Bill Ward during the 1980 tour, later performing with Dio‘s solo band and Iommi‘s various projects. Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler are founding members of Black Sabbath, established in Birmingham in 1968. This quartet’s final studio collaboration, The Devil You Know, reached the top ten of the Billboard 200. The group ceased operations following Dio‘s death from stomach cancer in May 2010.
