Description: Glasgow avant-punk group Humour issue debut album Learning Greek on So Young Records 8 August 2025, recorded with Rod Jones and centred on Greek family history.
The album was recorded at Post Electric Studio in Edinburgh with producer Rod Jones (Idlewild). According to the band, the material was selected from a group of 20 to 30 demos, with later additions such as Memorial, In The Paddies, and Plagiarist emerging during the final phase of recording. The group worked over a period of months, with the process described by members as more structured than previous releases, which had largely been produced informally while the members lived together.
Learning Greek incorporates a thematic focus on language, heritage, and family history. Vocalist Andreas Christodoulidis, who also creates all of the band’s visual material, has described the title as originating from a lyric referencing his decision to begin learning Greek. The record draws on his own background, including references to modern Greek history, mythology, and family members. In a track-by-track commentary accompanying the album, he connects certain songs with texts such as Alice Oswald’s Memorial and writings by Andreas Embirikos.
The third single, Memorial, was released in June 2025. The band previously released Neighbours, which was added to the BBC 6 Music playlist. Learning Greek is their first full-length release for So Young Records, an independent London-based label.
Humour formed in Glasgow and began releasing music in the early 2020s. Their early output includes the EP Pure Misery, followed by A Small Crowd Gathered to Watch Me. Their music combines elements of post-hardcore, noise rock, and post-punk. Members of the group are involved in both the musical and visual aspects of their output. The group has received coverage in UK and US publications including The Guardian, DIY, Brooklyn Vegan, and Stereogum. Christodoulidis is also active as an illustrator and is responsible for all artwork associated with the band’s releases.
