The Noise Who Runs’ “The Summer Talking” Premieres on Retrofuturista

Ian Pickering, recording under the name The Noise Who Runs, premieres “The Summer Talking” today on Retrofuturista, the third single from his album ‘Re: GenX’, out via TNWR Records on 8 May 2026. Built around the repeated line “it’s just the summer talking,” a hook simple enough to stay with you well after the season it names, the song sits inside a period in which sunlight, nostalgia and hope temporarily distort judgment, turning ideas of escape, new beginnings and permanence into illusions that dissolve once the weather changes.

Pickering has said the song is about self-deception more generally, and about a habit of choosing short-term comfort over uncomfortable truths, whether inside a relationship, in the idea of somewhere better, or in the belief that one more holiday will pass without consequence.

The accompanying video turns those same ideas toward tourism and the climate crisis, using holiday imagery as a marker of a world determined to hold on to familiar comforts while the environmental emergency worsens. Pickering has been clear the video is not aimed at holidays themselves, but at governments that continue to withhold the urgency the crisis requires, arguing that the biggest polluters should not be exempt from the sacrifices asked of everyone else.

Before this project, Pickering wrote for Sneaker Pimps, contributing to songs including “Spin Spin Sugar,” “6 Underground” and “Tesko Suicide,” and has also worked with Front Line Assembly. After leaving Hartlepool, in the north-east of England, he settled in Lille, moving there in 2016 for personal reasons rather than in response to the Brexit vote that had just taken place. Under the name The Noise Who Runs he released the album ‘Preteretrospective’ in 2023 and the EP ‘Come and Join the Beautiful Army’ in 2024, both earning airplay in more than sixty countries.

‘Re: GenX’, mixed and mastered by Colin C at The Cell Studio, addresses systemic greed, ongoing warfare and the erosion of human dignity, alongside what Pickering frames as the silence of his own generation in the face of the dismantling of post-war progress. In a recent interview for Retrofuturista, Pickering pointed to the 2008 financial crash as the moment Gen X should have pushed back, when governments used public money to rescue banks rather than reassess the system that had failed. He described the record as “an expression of being let down by the system,” adding that he counts himself among those affected rather than standing apart from them.
