Description: Jarboe's Disburden Disciple gets its first vinyl release on April 25, 2025, through The Circle Music with remastered audio by George Emmanuel and updated artwork.
Originally recorded in Atlanta and Israel between August and December 1998, Disburden Disciple incorporates themes centered around loss, suffering, and psychological turmoil. Tracks include references to themes such as emotional wounds (Scarification), revival (Kiss of Life), accusations of murder (The Séance), and war as an internal conflict (Pure War). The album begins with Bound, a song that lyrically presents a juxtaposition of personal freedom and entrapment, musically incorporating elements reminiscent of 1970s rock.
A newly released video for the remastered version of Bound, directed by Wampyrion, features Jarboe’s 2000 solo performance at the Knitting Factory in New York City, which was supported by an art grant. The performance included choreography and theatrical elements, with masked figures binding Jarboe on stage. The multi-track recording of this event also includes material from Disburden Disciple and selections from her previous solo work and time with Swans.
Jarboe La Salle Devereaux, known professionally as Jarboe, is a musician and vocalist whose career began in the early 1980s. She was a core member of Swans from the mid-1980s until the band’s dissolution in 1997, contributing to albums such as Children of God (1987), White Light from the Mouth of Infinity (1991), and Soundtracks for the Blind (1996). During her time with Swans, she played a pivotal role in expanding the band’s sonic range, integrating elements of gothic, industrial, and experimental music.
Following Swans’ breakup, Jarboe pursued a solo career, releasing numerous albums that explore themes of transformation, introspection, and mortality. Her work frequently incorporates unconventional vocal techniques, minimalist arrangements, and collaborations with musicians from various genres, including Neurosis, Justin K. Broadrick, and Blixa Bargeld. Throughout her discography, she has engaged with diverse musical styles, from industrial and avant-garde to dark folk and ambient compositions.
In addition to her recorded output, Jarboe has toured extensively, performing solo and collaborative works worldwide. Her performances often incorporate theatrical and performance art elements, emphasizing the physical and psychological aspects of sound and movement.
The 25th-anniversary edition of Disburden Disciple continues The Circle Music’s ongoing effort to release Jarboe’s catalog on vinyl.
