‘Leaves’ by Julia Greenberg Out Now on Magic Door Record Label

Julia Greenberg, a singer-songwriter based in New York City, has released ‘Leaves’, a single that arrives on April 21 ahead of her ‘Born Sentimental’ EP, scheduled for June 11 on Magic Door Record Label.

The song was written over several years following a personal tragedy. In it, Greenberg references the Kurt Weill standard ‘September Song’, turning it into a moment of self-reproach: a woman sitting in the shade with her guitar while everyone else is at the lake, singing about autumn in the middle of summer. The track was recorded live at Chrometop Studios with a quartet that has spent roughly five years playing together across the Northeast.

The video, directed by Greenberg herself and edited by Nico Greenberg, with Yumiko Takagi as director of photography, was shot in a small-town schoolhouse described as “frozen in time.”

The EP was co-produced by Bob Perry (The Winter Hours) and Greenberg, engineered by Perry, and mastered by Ray Ketchem (whose credits include Guided by Voices, Elk City, Gramercy Arms, Luna, Crash Harmony) at Magic Door Recording Studio in Montclair, New Jersey.

Greenberg has previously released two albums of original music, ‘Past Your Eyes’ and ‘Greenland’, both produced by James Mastro (The Bongos, Mott the Hoople, Ian Hunter, Patti Smith, John Cale). Her music has appeared on ‘This American Life’, including an episode in which Phil Collins evaluated a breakup song she co-wrote. Ronnie Spector recorded one of her songs.

Her documentary ‘Dory Previn: On My Way to Where’ premiered at the SXSW Film & TV Festival in 2024 and is now available on PBS. Greenberg is the archivist for Dory Previn‘s estate and has performed Previn’s music at venues including Joe’s Pub, Mass MoCA, the 92nd Street Y, and the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, as well as on WFMU and WNYC radio.

Her theater work includes co-writing the off-Broadway rock opera ‘People Are Wrong!’ with Robin Goldwasser and composing music for the off-Broadway play ‘Cavedweller’ alongside Stephen Trask (composer of ‘Hedwig and the Angry Inch’). She co-curates the music program at the Rock Valley Schoolhouse in the Catskills and works as a health justice advocate.
