Justin K Broadrick and Mick Harris Reunite for Eight Tracks of Hard Techno on SHOUTING THE ODDS

Broadrick and Harris reconnect five years after SEE RED for eight tracks at 130–140bpm

Justin K Broadrick and Mick Harris have been circling each other’s orbits since the mid-1980s Birmingham extreme music scene. Both passed through Napalm Death at formative stages of that band’s existence; both moved decisively into electronic music in the years that followed. Their second split release as JK Flesh and Monrella, SHOUTING THE ODDS, arrives on April 10, 2026, via GIVE/TAKE and Broadrick’s own Avalanche Recordings. The LP doubles the track count and runtime of their 2021 split EP SEE RED, which carried two tracks per side.

JK FLesh Monrella Shouting the Odds

Description: JK Flesh and Monrella drop SHOUTING THE ODDS, an eight-track hard techno split LP on GIVE/TAKE and Avalanche Recordings, out April 10, 2026.

The eight tracks sit in the 130–140 bpm range and split evenly between the two projects. Broadrick’s four contributions lean toward a more traditional hard techno framework; minimal synth arpeggios, restrained toplines, tight transitions. Harris’s Monrella side pulls more from house and experimental territory, with brighter, distorted synth hits and traces of forlorn melody threaded through layers of filtering, delay, and glitch.

Broadrick (born 1969, Birmingham) played guitar on Napalm Death’s debut album Scum in 1987 before co-founding Godflesh, one of the earliest bands to fuse industrial music with extreme metal. He later formed Jesu, a project rooted in post-industrial and shoegaze structures, and has maintained a parallel career as a producer and remixer for artists including Pantera, Isis, Mogwai, and Pelican. His electronic work under the JK Flesh name dates back to sessions recorded between 1997 and 1999 during his collaboration with Kevin Martin in Techno Animal, though the first solo JK Flesh album, Posthuman, did not appear until 2012 on 3BY3. He has cited early rave encounters with Jeff Mills, Robert Hood, Plastikman, and Aphex Twin as formative, alongside his long friendship with Karl O’Connor (Regis), head of Downwards Records. JK Flesh has released four studio albums and several EPs; the project has progressively shifted toward a more minimal, dub-inflected techno sound while retaining its industrial core.

Harris (born 1967, Birmingham) drummed for Napalm Death between 1985 and 1991 and is widely credited with coining the term “grindcore” and popularising the blast beat. After leaving the band, he joined Painkiller, a free jazz/extreme metal trio with John Zorn and Bill Laswell. His primary solo projects since the mid-1990s have been Scorn (dub-influenced electronic music, initially a collaboration with Nick Bullen) and Lull (ambient). Additional aliases include Quoit (drum and bass), Fret, and Monrella. The Monrella name first appeared on records in the late 1990s, applying a Birmingham-born sensibility to a Detroit techno template. Harris stepped away from music for several years before returning with Scorn’s Café Mor in 2019 and re-engaging with the Fret and Monrella projects.

Broadrick and Harris reconnected through correspondence in 2017 after Harris performed as Fret at Berlin Atonal. The See Red EP followed in January 2021 on Avalanche Recordings. SHOUTING THE ODDS is available for pre-order on limited clear smoke vinyl, CD, and digital formats.
