The Magic Door Records single pairs an English and French version of the same story.

Retrofuturista premieres “The High Life,” the new single from French singer-songwriter Laurent Moitrot, out August 18 via New Jersey’s Magic Door Record Label. It arrives with a French-language counterpart, “Le Blues du H.L.M.,” and the two versions tell the same story from opposite emotional angles.

The song began as something darker. Moitrot wrote “Le Blues du H.L.M.” while his marriage was ending, setting it inside an H.L.M., the cheaply built high-rise housing common in France for low-income families. A conversation with his friend Andrew Field in Manchester supplied the turn: the ironic phrase “living the high life,” used to describe existence on a housing estate. Moitrot built out three characters, Curtiss, Mary and Nigel, and added a fourth verse that tilts the story toward optimism rather than despair.

Musically the track holds a loose, unhurried swing that suits its cast of ordinary people better than polish would. It was recorded, mixed and mastered by Ray Ketchem at Magic Door Recording Studio in Montclair, New Jersey, and produced by James Mastro, whose credits include The Bongos, Mott the Hoople, Ian Hunter, Patti Smith and John Cale. Mastro plays keyboards; Ketchem adds percussion. Bassist Paul Page and drummer Doug Yowell round out the band.

The single follows Moitrot’s six-track EP “Donne-moi du temps,” recorded with the same team in May 2025 and built around French-language material. Moitrot has performed since 1976, starting on piano at seven, and spent decades splitting his time between music and a career teaching mathematics. His debut album, “Little Monsters Most Of Them Blue.s,” was produced by Laurent Thibault, a founding member of Magma and former director of Château d’Hérouville.
