Lower Slaughter resume work after 2019’s Some Things Take Work

After a five-year interval, Lower Slaughter return with a new line-up and an album titled Deep Living, out 6 June 2025 on Human Worth. The Brighton-based label has pressed a limited edition of 300 vinyl copies, with 10% of proceeds pledged to the PANDAS Foundation, which supports individuals affected by perinatal mental illness.

The band’s previous configuration ended following the departure of original vocalist Sinead Young. The current line-up includes James Gardiner on bass, with former bassist Barney Wakefield now handling vocal duties. Graham Hebson (drums) and Jon Wood (guitar and keys) remain from the earlier line-up. Gardiner’s addition coincided with a shift toward a more expansive sonic direction, with continuity provided by the rhythm section of Hebson and Wood.

The 12-track album was recorded and mixed by Wayne Adams (Petbrick, Big Lad), who has collaborated with the group previously. Mastering was completed by Sam Grant (Pigs x7, Rubber Oh). The track titles include “Year Of The Ox,” “Hospital Chips,” and “The Shape Of The Fire.”

Lyrically, the album moves away from the introspective and instead draws from multiple registers including personal events, historical incidents, folklore, and political unease. Wakefield, now responsible for the lyrics, references personal trauma as a structural basis rather than a thematic one, using it as a departure point to address a broader set of concerns.

Lower Slaughter originally formed in Brighton and Glasgow in the mid-2010s. The early line-up featured members from bands such as Divorce and Bitches. Their debut full-length What Big Eyes was released in 2017, followed by Some Things Take Work in 2019. Their output has been characterised by abrasive guitar work and vocals delivered with a sense of urgency, often described as adjacent to noise-rock, post-hardcore, and garage-punk circuits.
