Luna Honey is a band that originated in Washington, D.C., in 2017. The group comprises vocalist and guitarist Maura Pond, guitarist Benjamin Schurr, and bassist Levi Flack. The band began when Maura Pond and Levi Flack started collaborating informally in Flack’s basement with the intention of creating an album. They connected with Benjamin Schurr, founder of BLIGHT.records and member of bands such as Ruah, Br’er, and Nyxy Nyx, after his band Br’er opened for Arto Lindsay at the Black Cat venue. Schurr agreed to produce and record their music, leading to the release of their debut album, Peace Will Grind You Down, in 2018. Following the completion of the album, Schurr became a permanent member of Luna Honey, and baritone saxophonist Madeline Billhimer joined the band. This four-member lineup released a live album titled Peace Lives, featuring tracks primarily from their debut. Billhimer departed from the band during the recording of their second full-length album, Ballast, which was released in 2021.

In 2019, Schurr moved to Philadelphia, and Flack followed shortly after. On December 24, 2019, Pond composed music in response to her aunt’s terminal illness, resulting in the creation of the fourth album, Branches, recorded in Anacostia. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 led Pond to relocate to Richmond, Virginia, to be closer to her family, with Schurr joining her there. During this period, the band members continued to collaborate by commuting between Richmond and Philadelphia, which led to the release of Parables in 2022.

After the passing of Pond‘s mother in 2020, she collaborated remotely with Norman Westberg, guitarist for Swans, to produce the album Aftermath in 2023, which explores themes of grief and loss. In 2022, Pond and Schurr moved back to Philadelphia, reuniting the band in the same city. The band then focused on recording their latest album, Bound, aiming to capture the energy of their live performances.

Bound was recorded at Dan Angel’s In The Shadow of Boner Forever studio in Philadelphia and the band members’ home studios. The album includes contributions from Dan Angel on drums for most tracks and Roger Martinez on upright bass. It was self-released on November 22 and is available on cassette, CD, digital download, and streaming platforms. The album can be accessed through SoundCloud.

Luna Honey has performed with artists such as Norman Westberg of Swans, Eric Hubel, Exploded View, Molly Nilsson, Abdu Ali, Martin Bisi, Buck Gooter, and hackedepicciotto, members of Einstürzende Neubauten. These collaborations have contributed to the band’s diverse sound and creative process.
