Macchinetta.AM V2 (Beta): A Browser-Based Groovebox for Lofi & Industrial Sounds

Create Industrial, EBM, and Noise Music Online with Macchinetta.AM V2

Macchinetta.AM V2 is a browser-based groovebox project designed for creating loops and sketches with a lo-fi, industrial, noise, EBM, or ambient flavor.

Description: Create lofi & industrial loops with Macchinetta.AM V2, a free browser-based groovebox. Features synths, a drum machine, and a Song Arranger.

This is a beta release and an amateur project, so expect quirks, potential performance issues during long sessions, and a few bugs (such as non-functional panning). If the application becomes unresponsive, a simple page refresh will usually solve the problem. Despite its limitations, it can be a fun tool for sound design and experimentation.

Currently, there is no project saving/loading functionality. However, you can record the main audio output to a .wav file using the REC button in the main transport section.

Core Features

The Combinator (Mixer)

This is the central mixing console. Each sound module has its own channel strip here, allowing you to control its volume and stereo panning.

The Intonarumori (Song Arranger)

This module allows you to arrange your patterns into a full song:

  • LIVE/SONG Mode: Switch between playing individual patterns live (“LIVE” mode) and playing a full arrangement from the timeline (“SONG” mode).
  • Pattern Library: All of your non-empty patterns appear here. You can drag and drop them onto the timeline.
  • Timeline: A multi-track view where you can place and move your patterns to build a song structure.
  • Zoom & Sections: You can zoom in/out of the timeline and create different sections (e.g., intro, verse, chorus) for easier navigation.

The Sonomass (Master Visualizers)

Sonomass serves no functional purpose other than to visually indicate feedback on the main output. It includes a real-time oscilloscope to see the waveform and a “Sonomass” VU meter to monitor overall loudness.

Sound Modules

Pulsator Sequencer & Pulsator Controls

This is the main drum machine:

  • Sequencer: A classic 16-step sequencer for four drum parts: Kick, Snare, Hat, and Clap. You can switch between 8 different patterns and supports various time signatures (4/4, 3/4, 5/4).
  • Controls: The Pulsator control panel lets you select from 3 different drum kits (808-style, Lo-fi, Industrial) and apply four separate effects (Distortion, Delay, Reverb, Bitcrush) to each individual drum sound.

Gravis 1 & Gravis 2 (Synthesizers)

These are two identical subtractive monosynths, useful for basslines or leads:

  • Sound Engine: Features selectable waveforms (saw, square, pulse, etc.), drive, and a filter with resonance and envelope modulation.
  • Sequencer: Each has its own 12-note piano roll sequencer with 8 available patterns.
  • FX & Controls: Each includes Crush, Delay, and Reverb effects, along with transpose function, presets, and a legato mode for sliding notes.

Cubion

A versatile synth module designed for melodies, pads, or drone sounds:

  • Synth Modes: Features 5 different synthesis types (FM, Duo, Mono, AM, Membrane).
  • Controls: Key parameters include Harmonicity, Vibrato, and Glide (portamento). It has its own effects chain (Drive, Delay, Reverb).
  • Sequencer & Hold: Can be played via its piano roll sequencer or manually. The Hold button sustains the last played note, making it useful for creating drones.

Rombatore

A drone and texture synthesizer:

  • Sound Engine: Designed for continuous, evolving sounds. It has 5 different modes (Drift, Ring, Static, Warp, Crunch), each with three unique “Morph” controls.
  • Extensive FX: This module has the most built-in effects, including Phaser, Chorus, Tremolo, Delay, Bitcrusher, and Reverb, allowing for complex soundscapes.

Arpeggiator

A flexible arpeggiator module:

  • Synth Engine: Comes with 5 different sound modes (Classic, Bell, Square, etc.).
  • ARP Controls: You can change the arpeggio pattern (Up, Down, etc.) and speed. Three “Morph” knobs provide sound-shaping possibilities that change with each synth mode.
  • FX: Includes Drive, Phaser, and a Frequency Shifter.

Replicator 1 & Replicator 2 (Samplers)

Two identical sampler modules:

  • Functionality: Load any audio file (up to 12 seconds) to create your own instrument.
  • Controls: Shape the sound with Attack/Release envelopes, a filter, gain, and vibrato. You can play your sample via the on-screen keyboard or the piano roll sequencer.
  • Features: Includes a Hold mode for creating continuous sounds, a transpose function, and its own set of effects (Crush, Delay, Reverb).

Known Issues & Future Plans

Current Status

Please be aware that this is a beta version. You may encounter bugs or unexpected behavior.

Known Bugs

  • Panning: The pan knobs in the Combinator (Mixer) are not currently functional.
  • Rombatore: There are some known issues with the Rombatore (drone) module that can cause sound inconsistencies.

The Future

We hope to address these bugs in future updates, add the saving/loading functionality, add new modules, and make several design updates.
