Will Yates announces new Memotone album for summer 2025

Will Yates, working as Memotone, will release a new album titled smallest things on World of Echo on 1 August 2025. The record consists of 12 tracks and will be available both digitally and on vinyl. A preview track, Time Is Away Theme, is now available. A live date is scheduled at Walthamstow Trades Hall on 8 November, as part of World of Echo’s annual event.

In statements shared alongside the release, Yates connects the album’s title to themes of insignificance, environmental decay, and disconnection from material value. He references the contrast between personal observation and global instability, describing a focus on the unnoticed or neglected. The phrase smallest things is used to position both human experience and natural processes on an equal, diminished scale.

Active since 2007, Yates has released over fifteen recordings as Memotone, including works on The Trilogy Tapes, Discrepant, and Soda Gong. His studio and live setup typically includes clarinet, guitar, synthesizers, samplers, and a small array of pedals. His discography includes Chime Hours (2016), Invisible Cities (2020), and How Was Your Life? (2022), among others.

According to the label, the new album moves away from loop-based structures and electronic layering. The instrumentation is predominantly acoustic. The opening track, I Could See the Smallest Things, is described in accompanying notes as using spaced guitar, cello, and clarinet to produce a sparse, minimal arrangement.

Time Is Away Theme has previously featured in live sets but has not been formally released until now. No additional live dates have been confirmed.
