London Cellist Midori Jaeger Details ‘(Un)planted’, First of Two New EPs

London-based cellist Midori Jaeger releases a new EP, (Un)planted, on March 9. The record constitutes the first half of a double EP project, with the second volume following in 2026. “Dark green,” the lead track, is online now.

The material took shape during lockdown, when Jaeger was unable to return to Japan to visit her dying grandmother. Forced to remain in London, she used the isolation to examine questions of heritage and belonging. “Dark green” addresses a driving, universal energy, likened by the artist to nature itself.

Built on a “purplish, convulsing groove,” the track features Jaeger on cello and synths, supported by vibraphone, drums, and guitar. The composition focuses on biological rhythm, pulse and breath, framing the human life cycle as a shared reality.

Midori Jaeger is a cellist, vocalist, and composer. Born in Japan, she moved to the UK at age five, returned to Tokyo at sixteen, and settled in London at eighteen. She trained at the Royal Academy of Music, eventually moving away from the classical tradition to focus on her own composition style. Her credits include collaborations with Moses Sumney, Patrick Watson, Ex:Re, and Julian Lage. She has also worked with Courtney Pine, Shards, Daughter, and Heather Nova. Her previous release, the 2021 EP See Touch Kick and Sweat, was launched with a sold-out performance at London’s Green Note.
