MIEN Announce Album ‘MIIEN’ and Release New Single ‘Empty Sun’

The psychedelic group MIEN will release their second album, MIIEN, on April 18 through Fuzz Club. The band has also shared a new single, “Empty Sun,” accompanied by a music video. Following the album release, MIEN will embark on a tour across the United Kingdom and mainland Europe.

MIEN consists of Alex Maas (The Black Angels), Rishi Dhir (Elephant Stone), John-Mark Lapham (The Earlies), and Robb Kidd (Golden Dawn Arkestra). The collaboration began in 2004 when Rishi Dhir met Alex Maas at South by Southwest. Over time, the project expanded to include John-Mark Lapham, who contributed electronic elements and production, and later, Robb Kidd joined as a drummer in 2018.

The band’s self-titled debut album was released in 2018, and MIIEN represents their second full-length effort. The new album was recorded across multiple locations, including Montreal, Abilene, and Austin, Texas, reflecting a collaborative process where musical ideas were exchanged between members before being finalized.

“Empty Sun” originated as a series of loops combined with a vocal demo from Alex Maas. Initial recordings were made by Maas and Robb Kidd before the track was further developed by John-Mark Lapham, who introduced structured sections, samples, and layers of Solina string machine. Robb Kidd re-recorded the drum parts multiple times to refine the rhythm, while Rishi Dhir, alongside Elephant Stone guitarist Robbie, added extensive guitar textures. The song is characterized by layered synthesizers, rhythmic complexity, and dense guitar arrangements.

MIIEN builds upon the sound of their debut while incorporating new influences. John-Mark Lapham played a central role in shaping the album’s structure, transforming initial sketches into completed compositions with a range of textures and production elements. The album’s creation involved both remote collaboration and in-person sessions, including a period of intensive recording during South by Southwest in Austin.
