MIIEN brings together members of The Black Angels, Elephant Stone, and more
Austin-based supergroup MIEN, is scheduled to release their second album, ‘MIIEN‘, on April 18, 2025, through Fuzz Club. The band comprises members from notable groups: Alex Maas of The Black Angels, Rishi Dhir of Elephant Stone, John Mark Lapham of The Earlies, and Robb Kidd of Golden Dawn Arkestra. The origins of MIEN trace back to 2004 when Rishi Dhir met Alex Maas during South by Southwest (SXSW). This encounter led to a friendship and subsequent collaborations. Around the same period, Dhir connected with John Mark Lapham, whose expertise in electronics and production became integral to MIEN’s sound. Robb Kidd joined the ensemble as the drummer in 2018. These connections culminated in the formation of MIEN, blending their diverse musical backgrounds into a cohesive unit.
The album was recorded across multiple locations: Montreal, Abilene, and Austin, Texas. The creative process began with simple ideas—loops, vocal phrases, or grooves—that were exchanged among the members and gradually layered. John Mark Lapham played a pivotal role in transforming these initial sketches into complete compositions, incorporating bold textures and dynamic changes. Alex Maas contributed vocals that added a haunting and alluring dimension to the tracks.
