Nick Carlisle Releases New Album “Sailors On The Roiling Sea”
Northern Irish artist Nick Carlisle is set to release his second solo album, titled “Sailors On The Roiling Sea“, on 22 November 2024. The album will be available in cassette, CD, and digital formats through The Colour Inverted Records. A vinyl edition is expected at a later date. The new release features a mix of art rock, DIY pop, and vintage electronic sounds. It follows his live performances of “Häxan With Live Score” earlier this year at the Barbican, which were sold out.

“Sailors On The Roiling Sea” includes the single “AI Trash”, which addresses fears related to artificial intelligence, particularly its impact on creativity. Carlisle described the track as a “cartoon song,” created with a light-hearted approach. The song reflects on the potential of AI to challenge human creativity and depicts it as a chaotic mix of truth and fiction. The album’s title references a vision of AI as a turbulent sea, where human history and culture are entangled in confusion. French illustrator Clémence Mira was commissioned to design the album artwork, drawing inspiration from this concept.
The album explores themes such as artificial intelligence and climate change, examining the challenges humanity faces in the modern era. Tracks like “Early Formations” and “Spiralling” delve into various anxieties, from health-related fears to the overwhelming presence of AI in everyday life. “Falling Ice In New York City”, the album’s longest track, tells the story of an oil worker stranded on a drilling ship in the Arctic, mixing environmental guilt with surreal dreams of New York City.
The recording of “Sailors On The Roiling Sea” took place during the summer at the Church Road Recording Company in East Sussex, with Nick Carlisle taking on production duties. He performed lead vocals and played several instruments, including the Hammond C3 organ, Mellotron, harpsichord, and piano, the latter previously owned by Keith Emerson. The album also features contributions from a range of musicians, including Julian Tardo on bass guitar and guitar, Foz Foster on hammered dulcimer, Marcus Hamblett on brass instruments, and Aubrey Simpson on fretless bass guitar.
