Under the name Night Beats, Danny Lee Blackwell, a musician from Texas, has been active for over fifteen years, working within genres such as rhythm and blues, soul, and psychedelia. The new single presents two versions of the same song. The A-side features a down-tempo, minor-key composition characterized by a hazy, atmospheric tone. This track was developed in Blackwell’s studio in 2024, with the artist envisioning imagery of dusty roads and dimly lit dance halls. Blackwell described the guitar elements as designed to resemble heat waves, with a rhythm that evokes footsteps across a wooden floor, influenced by smoke and neon-lit surroundings. The song’s lyrics address themes of devotion and disillusionment, with the “green door” symbolizing the threshold between these experiences. The B-side introduces the Rah John version of “Behind The Green Door.” Rah John was discovered by Blackwell during a visit to Koh Khram Yai, an island near Pattaya in the Gulf of Thailand. Little is publicly known about Rah John, except for his interest in 1970s Thai disco and dancehall tapes exchanged by local sailors. His interpretation of the track infuses it with a lighter and more tropical tone, drawing from his musical influences.
Danny Lee Blackwell is a Texas-based musician and the primary force behind Night Beats, a project that integrates elements of vintage rhythm and blues, soul, and psychedelic music. Active since the late 2000s, Blackwell has developed a style that reflects a range of American music traditions. Over the years, he has released multiple albums and singles under the Night Beats name, contributing to the contemporary psychedelic rock scene. His music is characterized by its integration of classic genres, shaped through his personal interpretations and studio techniques.
The limited 7″ vinyl of “Behind The Green Door” will be distributed via Fuzz Club and Suicide Squeeze starting April 11, 2025.
